NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

TUESDAY 16TH MAY 2006

THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF REPTON VILLAGE HISTORY GROUP WILL TAKE PLACE AT 7.30 PM IN REPTON VILLAGE HALL, ASKEW GROVE. ALL MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND.

THIS WILL BE A SHORT MEETING FOLLOWED BY OUR NORMAL MONTHLY EVENT.

MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTIONS

These are due for renewal on 1st April. We will be asking members to renew their membership through to the end of March 2007 at our next and at subsequent meetings.

OUR FEBRUARY MEETING

Jim Willder gave an illustrated talk about his experiences as the “Ticknall Paper Boy”

When, in the early 1940’s, at nine years of the age he took on a six mile paper round. His route started in Ticknall village and went more or less round the perimeter of Calke Park including Heath End and Calke village. The latter part of the route is now

under the waters of the Staunton Harold Reservoir. He told us that he was excused the first twenty minutes of school each day as his job was considered part of the “war effort”!

He commenced by describing Ticknall as it was in the early part of the war. He illustrated documents such as Identity Cards and Ration Books, newspapers showing the blackout times and various wartime documents advising people how to go about their business. He pointed out that Ticknall was a very self sufficient village due to its rural nature with many farms and many of the population having allotments or large gardens to grow vegetables and to keep pigs and chickens. He felt that the diet in those days was very healthy.

He then described his route with the help of a large number of slides giving a history of the area and a fascinating insight into the way of life of a country area over sixty years ago.

“REPTON AND DISTRICT REMEMBERED.”

Three years ago our group staged a local history week-end with photographs, slide shows, recorded reminiscences and a collection of documentary archives. It was a great success and we were immediately asked to stage a repeat. This is what we are doing on SATURDAY AND SUNDAY 1st & 2nd APRIL IN THE VILLAGE HALL.

The exhibition will be open from 10am till 5pm each day and will again consist of photographic and slide displays, videos, oral reminiscences and an even larger selection of old documents. The photographic section will include images of Milton, Foremark and Ingleby.  Admittance is free and tea, coffee etc is available for a small charge. This is a big event so don’t miss it!

OUR APRIL MEETING.

On Tuesday 18th April Philip Heath, a well known local historian will be giving us a talk about the diaries of John Joseph Briggs from 1820 to 1875. These diaries have been edited by Philip and recently published in book form. John Joseph Briggs recorded life in Melbourne and King’s Newton at a time when Melbourne was a self reliant community needing little from the outside world. It was swarming with industry of all types and provided its own entertainment. The diaries cover all aspects of life in those days as well as the changing trends and fashions. Philip is an excellent speaker so this should be both an entertaining and instructive evening.

OUR MAY MEETING

On Tuesday 16th May we will be holding a short Annual General Meeting followed by a talk when Dr. Robin Trotter will tell us about the “History of Burton Abbey”. Once again we are fortunate to have the services of an excellent speaker who will give us an interesting and entertaining evening.

OUR JUNE MEETING

On Tuesday 20th June we have an evening visit to Burton Town Hall where we go behind the scenes meeting the Mayor, his aide and the Mace Bearer. During the visit we will look at the history of the Borough of Burton, the Mayor’s Parlour, the robes and chains, the Council Chamber and the Civic Insignia.

The visit is strictly limited to 30 and preference will be given to paid-up members. Those wishing to go on this visit should contact Alan or Gill Hiley at our meetings or phone them on 01332 273445.
